Hostage Negotiators are involved in many negotiation situations that are not hostage situations by the strictest definition of the term. Negotiators may be effectively used in situations ranging from barricaded subject incidents to stalking crimes. High-risk suicides, mental health warrants, high-risk warrants, debriefing of crisis victims, and stalking are all situations in which the negotiator can be of value.
In these situations because of their unique training, special skills, and knowledge, and different perspective on policing, negotiators can be effectively used to resolve these situations with no injury or loss of life (McMains & Mullins, 1996).
