COURSE OVERVIEW: From policing through a pandemic to unprecedented civil unrest, effective and strategic public communication for law enforcement has never been more critical. This fast-paced, one-day class is designed for small to mid-size police department social media managers and/or Public Information Officers and for supervisors who oversee the public message. The course provides strategies to engage traditional media outlets on positive news stories while managing the difficult stories and teaches proven social media strategies to connect directly with the public, manage negativity, and navigate the legal hazards of digital media, taught by a Chicago-area police chief who has over a decade of experience in law enforcement media relations and social media management in a major news market. All participants receive handouts with templates for Social Media Policy that may be use and adapted for your agency; along with specific state related legal/government compliance research conducted by the speaker for each seminar.  Handouts and research alone is worth $1000’s to your department!

Instructor: Chief Christopher Mannino serves as Chief of Police of a Chicago-area police department with over 23 years of law enforcement experience. A 2009 graduate of the FBI National Academy where his studies focused on Communication and Public Relations for Law Enforcement, he also holds a Master’s Degree in Political and Justice Studies. His public relations efforts have garnered frequent positive attention in the Chicago news market and beyond, where the mid-size police department with which he serves is known regionally for their positive social media outreach and frequent featuring in traditional news for positive stories.
