Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design

Instructor: Brian Kanicki

This 3 day class is based on the premise that “the proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the fear of crime and incidence of crime, and to an improvement in quality of life.”  CPTED examines the “why here” factor.  This course is beneficial to a wide range of professions ranging from law enforcement professionals to security consultants, to municipal managers, planners and code/zoning enforcement, and even schools officials, property managers, shopping districts and downtown development authorities.  Concepts learned can be applied to provide useful risk assessments and security surveys of existing properties as well as the development of new projects.  Attendees will learn about how lighting, landscaping, access control, signage, and the use of social activities can help in preventing crime, as well as how to utilize CPTED in existing crime prevention and community policing programs.

Crime Prevention on Patrol

Instructor: Brian Kanicki

This unique fast paced course has quickly become a favorite among police officers and administrators nationwide. While designed for front-line law enforcement officers to do more than merely respond to crime in their communities, this one-day class is a must for anyone in law enforcement who strides to provide a more preventative, customer service based approach to policing. This course will examine the basics of preventing crime, why crime occurs where it does, and how to successfully engage citizens to partner in community crime prevention efforts. While theories of crime prevention will be discussed, this course offers “real world” crime prevention examples along with providing tools and resources for officers to make an immediate impact within their own communities. Security surveys, risk assessments and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) theories will also be examined.

While the role of the police in our community has changed over the years, the prevention of crime has remained the number one priority. Yet, few law enforcement professionals ever receive any formal crime prevention training. Brian Kanicki has become one of our nation’s premier crime prevention trainers and experts. He is focused on delivering innovative and practical crime prevention courses for front-line law enforcement officers, as well as those assigned to crime prevention and community policing as their primary duty. His range of experience as a patrol officer, detective, and advanced crime prevention specialist enables him to integrate first-hand knowledge and experience to his training. Brian is committed to providing the best and most current crime prevention training possible.

He has developed several courses for law enforcement professionals and has trained hundreds of police officers throughout the US. His “Crime Prevention on Patrol” course has become a favorite among law enforcement officers and police administrators throughout the country.

Brian is a Michigan native and became a Police Officer in 1995. In 2013, after 18 years of policing in his home state, Brian and his family moved to Florida where he is currently working for a police agency in the Tampa Bay area. Brian is a certified Advanced Crime Prevention Specialist and Advanced C.P.T.E.D. Specialist.

These courses were an immediate success and his teaching expanded nationally.
